Contrary to what you may think right now, but the purpose of your life is not about YOU, your personal accomplishments, your peace of mind, your happiness, your family, your career, or anything else.
It’s about God. You were made for God’s purpose!
We as humans normally start our quest for the purpose of our lives by asking ourselves,
- What do I want to be?
- What should I do with my life?
- What are my goals?
- What are my ambitions?
- What are my dreams for my future?
However, each of these question focus on YOU, but it’s not about YOU! It’s about God.
Job 12:10 (TEV) says “It is God who directs the lives of his creatures; everyone’s life is in his power.”
Focusing on ourselves will never reveal our purpose! Here’s what I mean.
Let’s say you buy a new phone, program for your computer, or a camera. The first thing we normally do is bust it out the package and start using it. We take the cell phone out, pop in the battery, and start punching buttons, or taking pictures of everything around us. What happened to reading the “users manual” first. But when we do this without every reading the “users manual,” we never get to use the device to its full potential. Features that were installed on the phone, or the camera, for our convenience are never taken advantage of because we didn’t read the “users manual.”
The same is true with God. Many people today try to use God for their own self-actualization. But how can we reach our full potential without reading the BIBLE “basic instruction before leaving earth,” which is our “users manual?” We were made for God, God was not made for us. And life is about letting God use us for His purpose.
So what about self-help books, are they any good? Yes, but all usually end up giving you the same blueprint.
- Consider your dreams.
- Clarify your values.
- Set some goals.
- Figure out what you are good at.
- Aim high.
- Go for it.
- Be disciplined.
- Believe you can achieve your goals.
- Involve other, and
- Never give up.
True enough, accomplishing each of these will most likely bring you into success, but success is not the same as fulfilling your life’s purpose, they don’t even come close. You can reach all of your personal goals and still miss your purpose in life.
When it comes to figuring out your purpose in life, you need more then a set of “self-help” books.
Matthew 16:25 say “Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self.”
So, how do you discover your purpose in life? We have two ways of doing this.
- We can go through life guessing, and relying on speculation, or
- We can read our “Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth.”
A. The first one relies on “self,” guessing, reading and living by self-help books, principles and philosophies of others.
B. The second relies on the “users manual, our basic instruction before leaving earth” from the manufacture who created the YOU.
Congratulation!, you just completed reading the first day of walking out of the darkness of your life, and into the light.
As I said in the intro yesterday, here is the book we will be walking through together for the next 40 days.
